I'm Not Having Any Fun

This cold water is beginning to get to me. I'm finally on spring break. I've been waiting for this down time for weeks. I figured I'd be surfing every day. Well, it's Tuesday and I'm already rethinking this "surf every day" thing. I'm just too cold to enjoy surfing right now. I'd planned to head to San O on Friday, but between the cold water and the price of gas, I can't justify making the trip. I don't think I'd enjoy myself. So, right now I'm not too happy with surfing. But I'll get over it. I always do.

I've noticed you and Whiffleboy commenting on the water. I started surfing in NorCal and surfed up there for about ten years before moving down here (spoken in a grizzled tone...). After my first year, I ceased to even think about it, except for that first initial duck dive. You just have to have the right gear. Up there you have to because the waves are only good in winter. I've used a 3/2 all through this winter, and only a few times with booties. Last year I used the 4/3 a few times. So it sounds like you guys aren't wearing enough rubber. Get the right thickness (4/3 if ya gotta), maybe spring for the deluxe suit with state-of-the art seams, etc. and wear booties, gloves, and hood - whatever you have to do to be comfy. I also use one of those fleece lined rash guards. But don't let the water temp keep you at bay. A good wetsuit will cost you a lot less than a new board!

I totally hear ya---it's F'n freezing out there!! Bernie came home with blue lips on Sunday after surfing at Ocean Park. And I still am thawing out from last week.

I had on a 4/3 and a fleece-lined rashguard. I was still cold. I even had on booties. I'd put those things away weeks ago since this had been a relatively tame winter in terms of temperature. I just had a bad day in the water. I'll simply have to change my attitude when I go out tomorrow.

I actually love the cold water. Seriously. Yeah, it's nice sitting on the board in shorts, but there's something about surfing in chilly water that makes it a more visceral experience; I seem to have a lot more focus, and I'm much more aggressive. It's motivating.

Down here at San-O, even with gloves and booties guys are coming out saying how numb and frozen their hands and feet are. Not to mention that the swell has been blocked by the islands. Me, I'm staying warm and dry unless it gets real good.
