I think I recognize that spot (that rock!). Limited take-off area usually. So not right for 30 of your very best friends. Well. At least the sun was out, and the ocean was ocean.
kelped, that's only showing part of the crowd. I'd say it was double that size; you just can't see all of the other people who were there.
The sun was out, yes. The ocean was not cooperating though. It was probably irritated by the fact that all of L.A. and the Valley rushed to be in it. I was simply trying to get in at dawn and get out before the crowd got too stupid. That attempt was an epic fail!!
Thankfully, I went to a different spot the following day, one that wasn't pulling in the swell. There were four of us out. We all got waves, sunshine and the ocean without any drama or collisions.

What??
Are there more people this year? I think there are more people this year. And less swell. Put those two things together....
I'm all for folks enjoying the ocean. But. If only for safety's sake, I simply do not understand when folks paddle out for the first time -- or head out for their one of three annual surfs (which only happen during the summer, and only for the last few summers) -- amidst a "swell."
On a south, sometimes I'm in (or, more likely, driving out of town!). This one, I sat out Day One Madness. Other days will come!

Only 12 heads out in the water the last 2X I was out in the NORCAL return of the ground swell sessions from this past weekend...guess I'm lucky I live in such a inhospitable environment! ;-)

I sat out Day One as well. This picture is from the second day!

Ah, that's brilliant.
