Should I or Shouldn't I?

Well, it just kind of fell into my lap. 1968 VW Bus. Engine is great. Then it goes a bit downhill from there. Needs some body work—nothing extensive. Needs some interior work. In other words, it needs some love shown to it. $1500. JGirl, what do you think?

From our "Notes of the Weird and Strange" file, I surprised myself and probably my spouse by being able to say that I've been at this job for one year as of today. Truly and utterly amazing.

Nothing else to do when its flat? Looks like the board sitch is taken care of, nothing wrong with a new project.

My advice is this: Anything mechanical you can handle on your own with some good books from the library, and its never extremely expensive to keep them on the road. Esthic wise, dubs are not supposed to be pretty. I always say it, works well here...'Makeup hides the dirt'. Dont over repair or prime over rust spots. The areas that do need deep rust repair, use a diff colr primer then the base color. War wounds are her history so dont cover them up unless you are planning to do something gay with her like turn her into a 'showgirl'.
The inside will be fun! Go to thrift/2nd hand stores and buy fabric, go to carpet stores and ask for cut offs.
Leave her with her character and add some of your own.

So did you already pick her up?
Post pics, lets get a look at her.

SWEEET!!! A VW BUS!!! That's my dream surf mobile!

You should paint a huge bike on one side and have the wheels as its tires.

No, I don't have her yet. I just saw it yesterday and then told the seller (a VW mechanic) today that I wanted it. But he's got some work to do on it and I've got only half of the price. I'll probably have it in about a month or so.

I don't want it to be in pristine condition. That kind of defeats the purpose of buying it for the fun factor since it will be filled with surfboards and sand. I have a friend at work who just restored a VW Bug. I told her to ask her mechanic whether he had a bus for sale. We were both surprised when he said yes. So, we went to look at it yesterday. She thought I was horrified by what I was seeing. I wasn't. I was just taking it all in. I gave it some thought, talked to Soul Brother #1, and looked at buses last night on the 'Net. Today, I decided to take it. It'll be my project. This is going to be good since I really have no money at all. But I didn't think I should let this bus get away at that price.

I look forward to running alongside it while you start the engine and pop it into 2nd gear. (Did you see Little Miss Sunshine? Laughed so much I was in TEARS... so good.)

I saw Little Miss Sunshine right around the time I had my friend ask her mechanic about a bus. I think I asked first and then saw the movie. I'm still laughing at them and that bus. I loved that movie more than I thought I would.

cool - there is a group of bus owners that meet in San O every year. Not sure how often.

I had a 71 VW camper bus when I was 20. I had an accident where I rear-ended another car going less than 5 mph. It was then I realized that the only thing that was between me and serious injury was a very thin piece of sheet metal on the front of the van and the steering wheel which would be considered "lunch" if I was going 30 mph. I suddenly discovered that I WAS the "crumple zone". Bumper... what bumper?

So, unless you're using the van as a lawn ornament,
I would seriously think about your own safety driving that VDub down to Venice.

Clayfin, the next one is on August 7. I think it's called "Skip Work and Surf Day".

Surfing the Goon, I thought of all of that. I really did. This thing definitely wouldn't be a daily driver. But, yeah, there's no protection in that thing. And we know how the folks in L.A. drive; it's not exactly safe to get in a relatively new car, let alone an old VW bus.
